Touching the Void analysis - Front cover, back cover

Analysis of ‘Touching the Void’ front cover

The main image on the front cover is primarily white. This is used to represent the remoteness, emptiness and overwhelming nature of mount everest. Furthermore the white symbolises the snow on the mountains. White is usually associated with ice and coldness which shows the harsh and unforgiving conditions of mt everest. An alternate reading could be that the white is also a symbol of death. This is because many say that before you die you are surrounded by bright white lights. Within the main image you can also see a man holding on to what would be a safety rope. The colour pallete used to represent the man is blues and blacks. The blue connotes ice and coldness. Black also connotes death and sadness. This allows the sense of death, sorrow and sadness to be instilled in the viewers head which will make them want to watch the movie. The tpe of shot used is an action shot. This shows the viewer that there will be fast pace action within the movie and also helps create an audience of action lovers. There is an added motion blur added to the picture of the man which was added in post production and gives the effect of motion and the angle shows that the man is falling away from safety

The title is very striking. The red contrasts the white background and is used to catch the viewers eyes. Red connotes danger and blood and signifies that there will be a sense of risk. This can help create an audience of lovers of thriller movies. Furthermore the Red signifies love and passion which shows what the motive in the movie will be.

The capital letters could be used to signify shouting and danger, Which could allude to a scene in the movie. The capitalised and larger ‘V’ is used to symbolise a mountain and its sheer size in contrast to everything else. It has been intentionally made with a angle which represents the mountains peak. Additionally the choice to use a word starting with V is that the gap between the two points makes it look like a deep crevice in the mountain. Furthermore the sharp point at the top of the V represents danger.

‘TOUCHING THE VOID’ - Touching symbolises being very close to something. This already instills a sense of suspense. ‘Void’ means empty space. This could show that the climbers will be very close or even fall into a hole or of the mountain side (in the movie this is shown as one of the climbers falls into a crevice in the mountain which is a hole in the mountain). An alternate reading could be that the void means death and that the characters come very close to death. The titles font, colour and design is used by the text creators to represent the motif of the movie.

One Marketing strategy used is the use of a tagline. The tagline is in a bold font and capitalised which is used to catch the viewer's eye. The repetition of ‘Ultimate’ makes the movie seem like a spectacle and that it must be watched  The noun ‘adventure’ symbolises risk and excitement. This also makes adventure lovers want to watch the movie.  ‘Nightmare’ creates enigma making the audience question how and why the adventure took a turn. The tagline is short and easy to remember as its used as a marketing strategy in hopes a viewer will remember it and repeat it to friends and family.

The absence of any credits to directors or actors could be representing the independent nature and budget of the movie. Alternatively could also be due to the fact that it's being respectful to the families of the actual men who ventured up Everest and the man who died. This is because the movie is based on a real event and its respectful to the families to not have other peoples names all over the cover.

The ‘DVD’ symbol is shown on the front cover to allow the potential to know what format the movie can be played and allows for ease of purchase.

The production company logo is added on the bottom in order to build brand strength. Also fans of previous film 4 productions will see this and they would consider buying.

The age rating is added to fit in with regulations to make sure that parents can easily tell what is appropriate for children to watch.
